While not a new face to the Atlanta club/party scene, Flex Gang Slim is still a relatively new voice on radio airways. Noticing his talent for hosting in 2018, Streetz 94.5 brought Flex  in as a weekend personality. Flex is now currently hosting the weekly night show from 6pm to 10pm.  When he’s not in the Streetz 94.5 studio, he’s recording music of his own. Rolling out caught up with Flex  to hear more about his radio journey thus far.

How’d you get into radio, Slim?

I was say hosting in the AUC … Spelman … I was hosting  a lot of college parties. My brother went to Morehouse and he starting spinning and they never had someone to talk on the mic, so they got me. I did clubs in the hood … Lacura. You know, that’s real Atlanta … Crucial … Bankhead…Someone ran into me at one club and asked if I was interested in radio. I never did radio. I was lucky, especially for a dude like me. I always knew I was different; I was a chosen one. Listen, I’m from the streets and this [radio] is way better than UPS flinging packages.  It’s a dream job; my side of town be pulling for me … Zone 4.

What do you most like about radio?

Producing, but I also like to produce R&B music and I like the artistry behind it for sure. I got a single called Pull Up. They say radio leads you into music or music leads  you to radio like Yung Joc or even Ludacris. Honestly, I had no idea that Ludacris was in radio before he did music. I’ll venture off and do music and movies too … on God. I also didn’t know that stuff was recorded or pre-planned before it airs. I thought all radio was live; I thought you just talked. That really caught me off guard, but I learned fast for sure and I am still learning too.

Did radio help you with the ladies?

Not really. I mean it maximizes. Before radio, I was on the mic everywhere and tapped in and all the females knew my name, especially because I use to have long red dreads. They claimed me when I didn’t claim then. Then radio came along and they be like “Oh, you on the radio.” Like I said, it just maximizes. But, I’m also super nice though; I’m a Libra.

You are tatted up. Who’s your go to tattoo artist?

I go to my homegirl, Lena (IG: @lnaink); she been tatting me for a few years. I got my first tattoo when I was 14 or 15 … I got tatted in somebody house [laughs]. I don’t know when I got my first legal tattoo. I have no idea how many tattoos I have. My favorite tattoo is my grandmama on my arm. The girls love the tattoos — “Oh what is this, did it hurt?” [laughs] I like tattoos on chicks … I feel like she got to let me know if she got one on her cheeks. I’m not talking about facial cheeks. [laughs] She can’t be catching me off guard, ya feel me? I need to know.

Who are your favorite artists?

Lil Wayne, Future, Nicki Minaj … I got tatted and dreads because of Future and Lil Wayne.

Who’s your favorite artist right now?

Drake. He’s like a Wayne prototype. I like Summer Walker too especially because she does R&B.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Keep going. Stay positive. Keep your damn energy and keep that aura. Stay consistent. It comes with BS, but everything comes with BS; it comes with the territory.

Where can they find you?

@flexgangslim on everything.
