This weekend, movie enthusiasts are flocking to theaters as two highly anticipated films, Wicked: Part One and Gladiator II, face off in a thrilling box office battle. Both films have generated significant buzz, but early projections suggest that Wicked is leading the charge.

Early box office projections

According to early estimates from Deadline, Wicked has made a strong start, raking in approximately $11 million from Thursday previews alone on November 21. When factoring in additional promotions, including Monday’s Amazon previews and fan screenings, the total climbs to an impressive $23 million. Analysts predict that Wicked could potentially earn between $130 million to $150 million during its opening weekend, despite its lengthy runtime of 2 hours and 40 minutes.

In comparison, Gladiator II has also made a solid entry, with earnings of about $6.5 million to $7 million from its Thursday previews. The film is expected to reach $59 million to $66 million by the end of the weekend, which — while respectable — places it significantly behind Wicked.

What makes Wicked stand out?

Wicked, based on the popular Broadway musical, has captivated audiences with its unique take on the classic story of the Wicked Witch of the West. The film features a star-studded cast — including Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande — which has heightened anticipation among fans. The musical’s themes of friendship, acceptance and the complexities of good versus evil resonate deeply, making it a compelling choice for viewers this holiday season.

The Gladiator legacy

On the other hand, Gladiator II seeks to build on the legacy of its predecessor, the Oscar-winning Gladiator (2000). Directed by Ridley Scott, the sequel brings back the epic storytelling and grand visuals that made the original a classic. While it may not be pulling in the same numbers as Wicked, it still has a dedicated fanbase eager to see how the story unfolds.

Audience reactions and expectations

As both films gear up for their opening weekends, audience excitement is palpable. Social media is buzzing with discussions about which film viewers are most eager to see. Many fans of the musical are expressing their enthusiasm for Wicked, while others are equally excited about the return of the gladiatorial epic.

  • Wicked: Anticipated for its musical numbers and emotional depth.
  • Gladiator II: Expected to deliver thrilling action and dramatic storytelling.

A weekend to remember

As the weekend unfolds, it remains to be seen which film will ultimately dominate the box office. While early projections favor Wicked, the competition is fierce, and both films have their unique appeal. Moviegoers are in for a treat, with two vastly different cinematic experiences vying for their attention.
