Fans of the beloved Sister Act franchise have been eagerly awaiting news about the third installment, and Whoopi Goldberg, who reprises her iconic role as Deloris Van Cartier (Sister Mary Clarence), has been keeping the excitement alive with updates. Although a specific release date has yet to be announced, Goldberg assures fans that Sister Act 3 is indeed in the works and will be available on Disney+, where the first two films currently reside.

Behind the scenes: Who’s involved?

Tim Federle, known for his success with “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,” has been tapped as the director for this highly anticipated sequel. The script is being penned by Madhuri Shekar, who previously wrote for the horror film Evil Eye and worked on The Nevers.

Tyler Perry takes the helm as producer

Tyler Perry, a powerhouse in the entertainment industry, has joined the project as a producer. His involvement was hinted at during a 2020 appearance on “Watch What Happens Live” with Whoopi Goldberg, where they discussed the potential of reviving the franchise. Perry has been vocal about the slow progress of the film, expressing his desire to see it come to fruition. He stated, “I love the idea of us making this happen. But you know, the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I’d like to.”

Keke Palmer joins the cast

In a delightful twist, Palmer confirmed her participation in Sister Act 3. During a visit to The View in 2021, she boldly asked Goldberg for a role, stating, “Whoopi, I gotta shoot my shot … I just want you to know that I’m available for the job — any job.” Palmer later updated fans in 2022, confirming her casting and expressing her enthusiasm for the project.

Returning faces and new additions

Goldberg has also reached out to Sheryl Lee Ralph, who played a memorable role in the original films, inviting her to return. Ralph expressed her excitement at the prospect when asked about her involvement. Additionally, Tanya Trotter and Kathy Najimy have both hinted at their interest in returning, although their participation has not yet been confirmed.

Adapting to change: The impact of Maggie Smith’s death

Tragically, the death of Maggie Smith, who portrayed Mother Superior in the first two films, has led to a shift in the script. Goldberg revealed that they are making adjustments to honor Smith’s legacy, stating during an interview on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” “We’re having to make some readjustments because we just lost Maggie Smith, as you know. And so, we will get it done. We will get it done. It just is a shift.” This heartfelt tribute highlights the impact Smith had on the franchise.

What’s next for ‘Sister Act 3’?

As the production team continues to work on the film, Goldberg has expressed her desire to include contemporary artists like Lizzo, Nicki Minaj and Jennifer Hudson in the project. While there are no confirmations yet, the potential for such star power adds to the excitement surrounding Sister Act 3.

With a talented team behind the scenes and a mix of returning and new cast members, Sister Act 3 promises to be a delightful addition to the franchise. Fans can look forward to more updates from Goldberg as the project progresses.
