Detroit Diamond made it all the way to the last episode of the second season of “Rhythm and Flow.” Hailing, of course, from Detroit, she brought all the things we love about that city to the show: she showed her grit but also was able to show the sexy side of her, too, in multiple performances during the season. She was one of the final four contestants, and her final song was one of the best of the entire season. Detroit Diamond caught up with rolling out at the Season 2 finale event to talk more about her time on the Netflix hit show.
Do you feel like growing up in Detroit helped you this season?
Yeah, for sure. I feel like as soon as my audition, Big Sean was at the audition. So, you know, that was a big thing once me and Big Sean had that connection from that first episode. My whole city likes rap. It was dope.
What was the hardest thing you learned?
That, really, this [music] was just a mental thing. Like, we had to be able to learn how to create a song and memorize it and perform it within a 24-hour span. Like, nobody knows that. You know, nobody in the music industry has to do so. It’s just, like, I know mentally, like, nobody.
Who is the Detroit GOAT right now?
I don’t feel like we just got one GOAT in the city because everybody is turning, like, all the way up. And I’m just happy to, you know, be getting some recognition now.
How was it having millions of people watching every one of your mistakes?
It’s interesting because, you know, like, everybody got an opinion,; everybody’s judging you. Some people love you; some people hate you. It is what it is. So, I mean, it’s cool. Like, for the most part, it’s cool. And I’m just going, you know, to use it to my advantage to keep growing and doing.
Who would you compare your style to?
T.I. the most because that’s my favorite. But I really wouldn’t compare my style to nobody because I’m just me. But Tip, he’s my favorite artist; he’s my favorite rapper.
Who was your favorite judge? If you had to pick.
I actually messed with all of them. Honestly. It wasn’t just one. Like, I feel like they all gave honest feedback. They’re all legends doing, you know, amazing work. I need songs with all of them — I love them.
