Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Life Is Beautiful, the latest album produced by Alchemist featuring Larry June and 2 Chainz. In most cases, Alchemist can’t lose — he’s on a legendary run, having produced Grammy-nominated albums for Freddie Gibbs and standout compilations like Yacht Rock 2. What initially gave me pause was the distinctly different vocal styles of June and Chainz. Larry June’s laid-back, smooth delivery contrasts with 2 Chainz’s more in-your-face approach, which remains subtle yet effortlessly cool. Fortunately, their merger results in a luxurious sonic landscape.
Alchemist crafts a lush backdrop for what I’d call aspirational rap. Larry June plays the role of a player dropping gems to help you avoid the pitfalls of being a simp, while 2 Chainz reminds you of the extravagance that comes with a focused perspective.
The album opens with “Munyon Canyon” — “Munyon” being slang for money — where June raps, “I switch whips in the a.m., pick up the bagel with the cream cheese, the smoke with the view of the Sausali.” The reference to Sausalito, California, a picturesque, wealthy, and artistic city, sets the tone for an album that embodies the beauty of an elevated lifestyle.
Next up is “Colossal,” a track reminiscent of the Beastie Boys’ Paul Revere, featuring deep kicks and one of 2 Chainz’s most memorable choruses:
“They ask me where the roof, ain’t see it, HOFFA
Yesterday when I woke up, I ate lobster
She said she wanna drink my kids, foster
Everything I do is real big, colossal.”
He then launches into his signature ostentatious delivery, reinforcing the album’s aspirational theme. What I love most about Life Is Beautiful is how seamlessly both rappers complement each other without competing. They’re clearly comfortable in their own lanes, fully aware of their messaging and money, and it all comes together effortlessly.
At this point, it feels like Alchemist will never miss. The soul-infused production makes for an incredible rap album, and at just 37 minutes, it’s one I’ll be playing on repeat.
