Gemini Khai on Coco Jones, hearing loss and online hate

You might love or hate his content, but one thing is for sure, you are watching

YouTube video

Gemini Khai is one of the funniest content creators and twitch streamers in Atlanta. His success isn’t an accident either, he records about 30 videos every month and drops at least 5-6 of them each week. When you hear his story, it’s even more inspiring. Khai lost his hearing when he was in grade school and still managed to play sports — even receiving a scholarship offer to play football. After graduating, he started to take content creation seriously and in short order his content started to blow. Khai stepped into the Star Studio to talk to us about trolling, dating in Atlanta, and of course how to go viral.

How did you lose your hearing?

So, when I was about like 3 years old, I got a lot of ear infections that caused me to lose my hearing. So you know, I would go to the hospital, like probably every other what month, just because of my ear infections, and they were telling me I was losing my hearing. So, yeah, I just permanently started losing it in both of my ears. They tried to put tubes in my ear, but they kept falling out. So every time they did that, the ear infection would just keep coming back, and it just kept declining. My hearing just kept declining over time.

When did you start taking content creation seriously?

After I graduated college, I moved to Atlanta to really pursue this. I remember I had saw this guy on TikTok. His name is Jumbo Spice. He did a bunch of spicy food reviews, but he would do it in a funny way. So, I kind of just impersonated him, because I could do impressions to certain like people, and I did his impression, and I remember, I was like, “Man, I’ma just do it,” posted it, went to sleep that night, woke up, had like, 2 million views. I was like, maybe I could keep doing this. So, I just continued doing different people that was big on 10. Talking, impersonating, and people were loving it. So, I was like, “Well, let me just take it serious and keep progressing.”

Khai would do this, if not content creation

This was destined for me. I always wanted to be in entertainment some way, because I always wanted to be an actor. So, it was either this or acting, you know, or anything film-related. So, I probably would have probably been in production or something.

You included Coco Jones in one of your Pop The Balloon videos, how did that happen?

It just came across my radar. I honestly never really been watched the pop the balloon video, to be honest. I just think that’s kind of cheesy, a little bit, just a tad bit. I love what they do, and I see they got on Netflix. But I think some guys I was watching on YouTube were kind of incorporating the balloons into their video. And I was like, “Well, what if I did it in public?” So, I remember one day I just said, “Man, let me get some balloons.” I took a balloon, blew it up in the store. I’m like, “Man, I’ma just try it” and I did it on one person, I kind of like made it into a prank, though. So I was like, “Oh, you’re not giving what I like,” so I popped the balloon on her just to get a reaction. I think the one that really took off is when I ran into Coco Jones.

I had the balloon. I didn’t even pop it on her. Like, I didn’t even know it was her. I walked up, and then as I’m asking her a question, I said, “Hold on you look familiar,” because I ain’t gonna lie. And I said, “Hold on. Oh, wait, you Coco Jones,” and then she said, “Oh no,” like she had to walk off. But you know what’s crazy is she was about to, she was about to give me the conversation too. I know she, I could’ve got that, I should have shot my shot. We had a real, genuine conversation, till I exposed it but I just kept it going. And I stopped doing it for like, a few months, and then I brought it back but added more people to the prank, and it just took off.

You’ve went viral due to some negative comments; how do you feel about the hate?

I really, honestly don’t even look at the comments. … And I’ll go look at their profile, go scout and look at what they got going. I’ll be like, “I know they’re not talking.” And I just move on about my day, because at the end of the day, they are watching it. They’re helping me get more views and comments. So, I really don’t care, honestly. Like, it doesn’t really affect me, honestly.
