It is no easy task to stand out in a room full of tastemakers, corporate executives and creative talents who are the crème de la crème of African American society. Yet, the all-new Ford Fusion with its sleek design had no trouble making its presence felt at the launch event for Ford’s latest advertising campaign targeting the African American consumer. It also helped that the campaign titled “A Rose,” is inspired by the late Tupac Shakur’s poem, “The Rose That Grew From Concrete.”

Initially the connection between Shakur’s poem and a contemporary car may seem a stretch. However, as senior account director for Ford, Robert Bell notes that the empowering message of pushing oneself to overcome challenges is a factor that works both on and off the road. “It was about [the] message of the poem and what it represents. If you have desire and passion to achieve more in life, nothing can hold you back. That was [the] embodiment of the poem in terms of launching the vehicle and how that connects to African Americans,” said Bell.
