Detroit’s 31st annual Coats for Kids charity event took place on Nov. 2 at the Michigan Science Center. Detroit radio station FM 98.9 WJLB partnered with the Salvation Army to achieve their mission to provide coats for children this winter.
R&B singer Ciara arrived bright and early to support this magnificent cause. The children of Detroit were anxious and bursting with excitement anticipating the star’s arrival. Ciara must have gotten the memo that it gets “cold in the D,” because she arrived bundled up in her winter coat and discussed the importance of purchasing coats for kids. Ciara was also rocking her latest ice, her 15-carat engagement ring from rap artist Future.
Singer-songwriter and producer Rico Love and R&B singer Mario also showed up to support the event. Rico and Mario took lots of pictures with the children. Both celebrities encouraged donations and event attendance on the radio with WJLB radio personalities Coco and Bushman.
The kids were in for a real treat as they were surprised with a live performance from Mario and later a performance from R&B singer/songwriter from Sweden, Sebastian Mikael. Mikael sang his new single featuring Wale, “Last Night,” while playing his acoustic guitar.
There was a lot of love and support from local celebrities and rising stars from the city of Detroit as well, with appearances by Finally Famous members SayItAintTone and ADubb Da Gawd as well as rap artist IceWear Vezzo. Vezzo made it his personal business to make a significant contribution as he was once a child growing up in Detroit enduring cold harsh winters. Vezzo and his crew arrived with four jumbo bags of coats that they had purchased to donate to children this winter.
Detroit’s famous rapper Trick Trick was accompanied by his label partner from BMB Entertainment and former Murder Inc. recording artist Charli Baltimore. The BMB crew arrived prepared to make donations with Charli and Trick Trick both donating $1,000 cash and label manager chipping in as well to help meet the financial goal for Coats for Kids.
Local humanitarian and president of the “Enjoy Detroit” movement, Dave SBoy Woods also came to show support as his mission is to help restore love, truth, peace, freedom, and justice to the citizens of Detroit.
The event was a tremendous success, earning well over $70,000, which will purchase nearly 3,000 coats to keep children warm this winter.
