A Black man may finally get justice after being abused by a White police officer in Dover, Delaware. According to WMDT 47, Corporal Thomas Webster was indicted for assaulting a Black man during an arrest in December.
In August 2013, Webster and another officer responded to a fight that took place at a gas station. They stopped Lateef Dickerson and held him at gunpoint and told him to get on the ground. Dickerson complied with the police and held his hands in the air. He then kneeled on the ground and put his hands on the pavement. Webster snuck up from behind Dickerson and kicked him in the face.
Dickerson was knocked unconscious and suffered a broken jaw from the attack. Dashcam video shows how the attack occurred. However, Webster nearly got away with his crime when Delaware’s attorney general failed to indict him. But a new attorney general, Matt Denn, decided to open the case and a grand jury indicted Webster.
The ACLU is also suing Webster and the city of Dover on Dickerson’s behalf. Webster is currently on leave without pay.
