The country is on high alert. Multiple states and jurisdictions have declared a state of emergency or report a “severe” outbreak of the influenza virus, better known as the flu. Health officials have detailed an exponentially high number of emergency room visits, hospitalizations and deaths from this particular strain of the flu bug in 2013 than, with some states reporting triple and quadruple numbers of infected citizens in comparison to this same time last year.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and a compilation of the 50 states of influenza activity by the Associated Press, we’ve comprised the states with the most deaths from influenza in 2013:
