Porgy and Bess Takes Home Tony Awards

Sunday’s 2012 Tony Awards featured performances, glamour and upsets, most noticeably at the hands of the producers behind Porgy and Bess. The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, a revival of the original, took home “Best Revival of a Musical” beating out the stage production Follies thought to be a crowd favorite. The team behind “Follies” reportedly flew out the entire cast to New York’s Beacon Theater only to be upset by the all-Black casts’ reprise.

Similarly, the star of Porgy and Bess, Audra McDonald, took home her fourth Tony award after nabbing “Best Actress in a Musical.” McDonald beat out Laura Osnes from Bonnie and Clyde, Jan Maxwell for her role in Follies, Cristin Milioti in Once and Kelli O’Hara in Nice Work if You Can Get It. McDonald previously took home awards for A Raisin in the Sun” in 2004, “Ragtime” in 1998, “Master Class” in 1996 and “Carousel” in 1994.

While the Porgy and Bess win is no doubt a tremendous feat, the production lost in 8 other categories including “Best Original Score,” Best “Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical” and “Best Costume Design of a Musical.”

Besides Porgy and Bess, a number of musical productions took home trophies, check out the full list of Tony Award winners below. –danielle canada
