The ’90s Power Ranger fans around the nation were shocked when David Yost, the actor behind the original Blue Ranger, came out as gay in 2010. He revealed that he left the show after being verbally abused by producers. Although fans of the show have seen former Rangers from years past return for cameos, don’t expect Yost to make a Power Rangers return any time soon as a new article claims that he refused a reunion show over his previous abuse.
According to TMZ, producers of the current version of Power Rangers asked Yost to participate in a reunion episode alongside other members of the original cast, but Yost refused saying that he wouldn’t return because he was previously mistreated by producers over his sexuality.
Yost also commented on the request on Twitter:
“Megaforce=No 4 me. They lost me when the offer started ‘Dear Power Ranger’ and had several grammatical errors. #donewithabusiverelationships,” he wrote.
Yost was on Power Rangers from 1993 to 1996 and it was originally believed that he left the show due to pay issues. However, in a 2010 interview with No Pink Spandex, Yost revealed that he left the show because producers targeted him over his sexuality, claiming that they often called him a “fa**ot.”
Talk about a ruined childhood memory. It’s absolutely sad and unfortunate that Yost experienced such discrimination on such a beloved children’s show and we definitely understand why he would refuse to come back. Sadly, he’s not the only LGBT star who has experienced discrimination in the industry. Check out some others who were in his shoes below. – nicholas robinson
