Since Kim Kardashian announced that she was splitting from her NBA superstar husband Kris Humphries earlier this week, the reality TV starlet has endured a barrage of criticism and questions surrounding her marriage and divorce. And after recently speaking on the divorce in a blog post, Kardashian recently gave her first TV interview since announcing the divorce and denied rumors that she profited from her high-profile wedding to Humphries.
During a recent interview on the Australia’s “Sunrise” morning show, Kim and her little sister, Khloé Kardashian Odom, sat down to promote their new handbag line. However, the conversation naturally centered on Kim’s divorce news and the somber reality star discussed the pitfalls of undergoing a celebrity breakup in the public spotlight.
“It’s kind of what you get from living your life so publicly on a reality show. I get that questions are going to be asked and the scrutiny’s going to come, and there’ll be mixed emotions and so many rumors,” she continued. “That comes along with the territory, but also, it teaches me I kind of want to step back a little bit.”
Kim also addressed rumors that she earned $17 million for letting E! and media outlets cover her famous wedding, saying that the rumors are untrue.
“I think what really upsets me most is that there have been, from the start, so many rumors of money and dollar signs, of all these things thrown up in the air, that this cost this much, and this much, and this much … and so much of it not being true,” Kim said.
Khloé, sitting close by her sister’s side throughout the interview, explained that after dealing with the public scrutiny surrounding her whirlwind wedding to NBA star Lamar Odom, she understands her sister’s plight.
“You feel like you have to defend yourself to every person — which you don’t,” said Khloé.
Khloe also added that she was proud of her sister for remaining strong throughout the divorce scandal and sticking to her commitments.
“I’m really proud of Kim for not just bailing and canceling,” said Khloé, “ ‘cause this is a really hard time for her. Here, we have such amazing fans, but still, it’s not [going] away. You still have the paparazzi and everything here, so she’s being really strong. And Lamar and I are here to be her support at this time.”
Kim concluded that the scrutiny and paparazzi are all a part of the trappings of being a Hollywood star, but admitted that she is happy to be out of the country, if only for a short time.
“It’s a double-edged sword. We want to share these great times, but then when you want some time for yourself and have some private time, you’re not really allowed to per se, like in the public. It’s hard, and I’m glad that I’m out here in Australia to get my mind off of everything.”
Kim should definitely enjoy some time in seclusion, because, whether fair or not, there is definitely a world of criticism waiting for her wherever she goes. –nicholas robinson
