Lupita Nyong’o’s stolen Oscar dress, valued at $150,000 has been recovered, say authorities.
“We believe this dress is the dress that was stolen from The London West Hollywood hotel,” said Lt. Michael White, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, at a news conference Friday evening, where officials displayed the dress.
According to reports, the Sheriff’s Department received a call about 3 p.m. from TMZ, claiming that they had received an anonymous call from someone who said the dress was returned to the scene of the crime, where it was reported stolen just two days prior said Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Nicole Nishida.
But it was the anonymous caller’s shocking claim that caught our attention. According to TMZ, the dress was taken to the garment district in downtown L.A. where it was discovered that the pearls were fake, Nishida said. Instead of keeping the dress or trying to sell it, the caller returned to the London hotel and left the dress in a second-floor bathroom that is under renovation.
As previously reported, on Wednesday night, police received a call at 11:23 p.m. claiming that Nyong’o’s one-of-a-kind Oscar gown had been taken from her hotel room while she was out enjoying the after-party festivities. As for the culprit, while he or she did return the gown, that doesn’t change anything for authorities who say they will continue their investigation until the thief has been apprehended.
