There is no real right way to cover a song. Some classic covers, like Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower,” are radical departures that become standards and obscure the original versions; others, like D’Angelo’s “Cruisin,'” are more conservative–choosing to tastefully re-make as opposed to completely re-imagine.
But some covers are just plain bad. Just wrong. So unnecessary or so embarrassing that they make critics, fans and sometimes the artists themselves wonder “What were they thinking?”
