The premiere of Kanye West‘s latest video, for his single “Bound 2” from his controversial album Yeezus, was met with snickers and derision from many across social media and the blogosphere. Kanye seems impervious to ridicule at this point–in fact, he may relish it, but this particular video, with its combination of pomposity and soft-porn, seems to have provoked more prickliness than Kanye’s music typically invites.
Usually, people are annoyed with him –not necessarily his art.
But with the images of wild horses stampeding, CGI mountaintops and landscapes that have little-to-nothing to do with the song, interspersed with clips of Yeezy and his topless fiancé, Kim Kardashian, appearing to dry-hump on a motorcycle; it’s hard not to feel like this is a couple who have reached overexposure overload. Watching the video and seeing the responses, I tried to think of a perfect analogy for what I was witnessing. Then, my esteemed colleague, music writer Scott Poulson-Bryant, gave me one that perfectly paralleled what I was witnessing.
“Kanye has reached his ‘You Are Not Alone’ moment,” he posted on Facebook.
By jove, I think he’s got it.
