Talia Buford reports on environmental and labor issues for The Center for Public Integrity where she co-authored a series of investigative stories on the Environmental Protection Agency’s lackluster enforcement of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. “As we begin conversations about civil rights across all aspects of our lives, I think it’s important we make sure the agencies responsible for maintaining the liberties already won are held accountable,” explains Buford.

She also pinned a powerful and personal explaining how she missed the most compelling environmental story of the year, the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, Buford’s hometown. It began with the confession, “My mother told me about contaminated water in my hometown. I didn’t listen.”

“It was a great opportunity to reflect and process my feelings about the world I covered — something I don’t think we take enough time to do as journalists,” said Buford.

The Path

Prior to joining the Center for Public Integrity, Buford spent three years as an energy reporter for Politico. There, she covered natural gas and the Interior Department. She also authored the daily Afternoon Energy newsletter. Buford is primarily a print and digital journalist who has done photography projects; however, she plans to expand to radio soon.

After graduating college, Buford was legal affairs and municipal reporter for The Providence Journal in Rhode Island.

Noteworthy

She has received recognition for her work from the Rhode Island Press Association, the National Association of Black Journalists and the Hugh M. Hefner First Amendment Foundation.
