Lupita Nyong’o won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in her role as Patsey, a favored but abused slave, in the drama directed by Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave. This is the first Academy Award for the Mexico City-born, Kenyan-raised actress who was three weeks shy of graduating from Yale Drama School when she was cast by McQueen.
In her acceptance speech she said, “No matter where you’re from, you’re dreams are valid.”
