A pastor in Montgomery, Alabama, used his position of power to have sex with church members and could have given them the HIV virus. According to WSFA 12, Juan Demetrius McFarland revealed his secret in front of the congregation at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
McFarland told church members he contracted HIV in 2003 and was diagnosed with full blown AIDS in 2008. He also had sex with several women who attended the church and even had sex inside the church. McFarland never told the women he had been diagnosed with AIDS.
McFarland was a church leader for 23 years before the scandal broke. He also admitted to drug use and mishandling church funds. After the announcement, McFarland was removed from the church.
In Alabama, having unprotected sex without revealing an STD status is only a misdemeanor. Charges have not been filed against McFarland.
