“Boo-Yah!”
“Now that just ain’t right.” “Hear the drummer get wicked!” Before
1993, these phrases were just random slang that you would probably hear
from a teenage hip-hop fan as they held court with their peers. But
once a young sportscaster named Stuart Scott joined ESPN, those phrases
became par-for-the-course on nightly recaps of the biggest dunks,
longest passes and hardest hits in sports. Scott climbed the ladder at
the No. 1 sports network in the world, and grew from an upstart
maverick with a style all his own, to one of the most mimicked voices
in the industry – and one of the most respected personalities in sports
news. Now, he reflects on his decade and a half at the network, his
undeniable influence, that infamous ESPN camaraderie and the current
state of blacks in sports news.
