Irreconcilable Differences
Studio: Lionsgate
This underrated eighties movie directed by Charles Shyer and written by Shyer and Nancy Meyers takes an unorthodox look at divorce. It begins with nine year-old Casey (Drew Barrymore) dragging her parents Lucy Brodsky (Shelley Long) and Albert Brodsky (Ryan O’Neal) INto court when she sues them for divorce. Moving back and forth through time, the film shows how Albert and Lucy met, wedded and wrote a successful screenplay. The two parents become distant from each other, so Casey resolves to part from them and live with a maid who’s been caring for her. Irreconcilable Differences is partly drama, partly comedy, partly satire and wholly entertaining. – forrest green III
