Procter & Gamble’s nationwide My Black Is Beautiful campaign recently made a stop in Chicago and brought a couple of super celebrity friends along with them. Oscar-nominated actresses and icons in the black community, Queen Latifah and Angela Bassett, attended the University of Chicago-Illinois Forum on May 30.
As the thousands descended upon the My Black Is Beautiful event, it was obvious that while the free hair and make up was a plus, the crowd was eager to catch a glimpse of the two stars. For Latifah, the feeling was mutual.

“I’m sitting here trying to think about that because [black] means so many things to me. One is the fact that I can look out onto an audience like this and know that all of these women and young ladies — mothers who brought their daughters and grandmothers who brought their granddaughters — came here to experience this love, this support from the inside out,” Latifah said, after being asked by host, Tasha Smith, what the phrase “My Black Is Beautiful” means to her.
Bassett shared Latifah’s excitement and pride. “My black is beautiful is grateful that this is what I’ve got,” Basset said. “This is the beautiful skin that God saw fit to paint me in and each of us [represents] the rainbow — and there’s nothing we can do but live gloriously.”
The next leg of the My Black Is Beautiful tour touches down in New Orleans, July 3–5.
