The Cake Eaters
Studio: Screen Media Films
This feature directorial debut by actress Mary Stuart Masterson takes the cake as far as hokeyness. It’s an ensemble piece about two families and their issues. The Kimbrough clan consist of a father, Easy, who is mourning his deceased wife, and their two sons. The Kaminskis’ Marg has had an affair with Easy, and her granddaughter Georgia (Kristen Stewart) is a terminally ill girl with a muscular disease. Georgia wants to experience sex before she dies, and reveals an interesting character flaw while negotiating with Beagle Kimbrough (Aaron Stanford) to do so. The film moves very smoothly and authentically, but only with an utterly cliched spirit that even permeates the acting. Ultimately, who cares?
