Looks like the days of watered down R&B-soul music might be coming to an end. Jay-Z recently called out singers with his “Death of Auto-Tunes” track, but there are three more prominent reasons to think that soul music may be ready for a mainstream return —Maxwell, D’Angelo and Sade.

Maxwell’s album is scheduled to drop this summer, and he’s already blessed the masses with a couple of electric singles, including the latest to leak, “Bad Habits.” Sensual and well, soulful, Maxwell is clearly back on his game. Cue the hallelujah chorus.

D’Angelo has been playing around with his return for over a year now. But spots on Q-Tip’s latest, the Renaissance and Common’s Finding Forever indicate that he may seriously be dropping an album before the year is up. This should be a triumphant return for one of the artists credited with launching the so-called “neo-soul” movement.

Sade recently confirmed an official follow-up to 2000-s stellar, Lover’s Rock. Her label, Sony, says that she’s in the studio right now and should be ready to drop a new project by year’s end. Longtime bandmate, Stuart Matthewman, is confirmed for the project. –rogue marie
