My shop is comfortable. If you get a client that’s had a bad day, she needs to be able to come in and talk to her stylist and get it out. Sharing with other women is always a good way to do that. There’s a lot of laughter and interacting between operators and clients. Actually, [we] produced a video called “Drama in The Shop,” based on true stories about what happens when a hairstyle goes wrong or clients get mad.
What are the most popular hairstyles and latest trends?
A lot of people are wearing natural hair. They want to start wearing their own hair and let it flow. They are getting away from some of the chemical processes and weave styles that they’ve been wearing, which was damaging for some people. Wearing quick weaves are also another popular trend.
What do you suggest for hair maintenance during the summer months?
Make sure to use a good, deep-penetrating conditioner, because you don’t want build up. I don’t use a lot of oil or oil-based products … with dust and dirt or if someone is smoking, it will attach itself to the oil in your hair.

What’s the hot topic of conversation in your salon?
Well, it’s probably the one that everyone is talking about, the economy, GM, plant closings. But the topics run the gamut from family and church to relationships and shopping.
What are the most requested styles?
We’re doing a lot of frosting and colors [including] multicolors and different shades, from golds to blondes to reds. A lot of women are going into braids for the summer, especially if they’re working out and exercising. Braids have gotten so fashionable and they [often] look very professional. You can also [get a] texturizer, which is a natural cut with a smooth relaxer combed through to take out the natural curl.
What do you suggest for hair maintenance during the summer months?
Actually, just be sure to [use] a good conditioner [and] make sure you wrap the hair with a silk scarf and get a precision cut.
