What Does He Have to Hide? Lil Wayne Loses Battle to Block Controversial Documentary
Lil Wayne lost the battle to block a new documentary that his attorney claims contains ‘private and sensitive’ material about the famed rapper. The documentary, called The Carter, will be released by Digerati and QD3 Entertainment. Weezy’s attorneys alleged in the lawsuit that:
“Lil Wayne’s reputation and the value of his identity can be diminished by an unauthorized use of his image and persona, or by association with a movie or purported ‘authorized’ documentary that, in reality, does not meet with his approval and depicts him in a negative light and/or engaged in criminal conduct…”
But California Superior Court Judge Michael Mink denied the request to prevent the documentary and awarded sanctions against the rapper and his attorneys of $5,000 to be paid within a 30-day period. Mink based his decision on the fact that the evidence that Wayne’s attorneys used as the basis for the suit were not strong enough to justify the rapper’s allegations.
When it was screened at the Sundance Film Festival, The Carter was met with an enthusiastic reception. But there was a request from Lil Wayne’s management team to remove ‘certain scenes’ that the suit presented as a ‘scandalous portrayal’ of the rapper. Many fans and websites are speculating as to whether or not the scenes in question feature drug use or other criminal activity. Given the fact that Wayne is currently on probation and has faced several legal battles in the past, these scenes could be particularly harming for him in a legal sense—though it is doubtful that his image or popularity would be affected. – todd williams
