As the nation celebrates 503 years of independence on July Fourth, many black Americans should take the time to free themselves from detrimental habits that impede success. Here are five things that black Americans need to declare their independence from while observing the nation’s favorite holiday. –amir shaw
Being Uninformed about the Legal System – America has always been a land of laws. Those who are uniformed about the law could face disastrous consequences if they ever face legal troubles. Millions of blacks have been incarcerated due to ignorance of the law. Since every law can easily be researched online or found in a library, all black Americans should study their state and federal laws in order to empower themselves by knowing the rules as it relates to their rights.
Self-Hate – Blacks across the nation must free themselves from self-hatred. We must stop taking our frustrations out on each other to the point that it leads to violence. We must stop seeing each other as enemies and begin to become allies in building a stronger community.
Not Taking Advantage of the Education Game – Young blacks must understand that education is a game they can play to their benefit. Education can no longer be seen as boring because it’s one of the only tools available that a poor person can use to become financially stable. Every black teen must approach school as if it’s a business or even a hustle. Because if every student can hustle when it comes to studying and doing class projects, they can use the educational system to get what they ultimately want.
Not Being Truthful About Sexual Habits – Black men and women can no longer lie to their partners about their sexcapades. Men have spread HIV by sleeping with other men while continuing to have sex with females. It’s time to stop lying and start using a condom in every sexual encounter.
Stop Being Absent From Our Children’s Lives – Every relationship will not succeed. However, it’s important for black men and women to raise their kids and give them physical and emotional stability. Black men can no longer leave their families after the baby arrives. Whether couples are together or separated, both parents are responsible for educating and caring for their progeny.
