First there was USA’s “Psych,” which offered a fun take on the art of detection by observation. Then CBS entered the fray with “The Mentalist,” a bonafide hit based on a former fake psychic who solves crimes by reading people. Now comes “Lie to Me” a show based on a real-life behavioral scientist. Perhaps if the show was the first of its kind, then it wouldn’t come off so forced. But Tim Roth’s character, Dr. Lightman, just walks around squinting at people trying to read every emotion to see if they are lying, which viewers may find tiresome after a couple of episodes. –dewayne rogers
