Michael Jordan wants everyone to stop rambling about the next Michael Jordan. As the six-time NBA world champion accepted his place in the Basketball Hall of Fame, he wanted the world to know that his legacy will never be duplicated. During the press conference on the day of the induction ceremony, Michael Jordan put the argument to rest.
“I see some resemblance of me in Kobe Braynt and LeBron James,” Jordan said. . “When I was coming up, people saw resemblance of Dr. J and David Thompson in me. That’s the evolution of basketball. Don’t be in a rush to find the next Michael Jordan. There will never be another Michael Jordan. Times are different and the game is different. The media is constantly trying to find the next Jordan and it won’t happen. You didn’t have to find me, so you won’t have to find the next player. But you will find the next player. And they could be better than Michael Jordan down the road and they’re going to create their own persona.”
Since the 1990s, the media has searched to anoint the next great basketball player. Individuals such as Grant Hill, Anfernee Hardaway, and even Harold “Baby Jordan” Miner were suppose to carry the profound mantle left by Jordan. However, each player struggled to live up to such lofty expectations. But as Jordan received his final basketball accolade, he wanted the world to stop searching for the next guy to fill his shoes.
