What’s are client’s talking about when they come in for service?
We have instituted The Why program which is a forum to promote positive
honest discussion while they’re here and even after they leave. We pose
a question to clients and ask for an honest discussion on the topic.
One of the requirements for being an operator here is that you agree to
replace gossip with information.

What are the cutting edge styles you see emerging?
People are returning to the ’80’s look, and wearing a symmetical bobs,
mohawks and lots of color.  Men are also wearing a more rugged but
polished look, like fuller beards but with more profound shave and
haircut lines.

How are you actively involved in supporting community intiatives?
We participate in a number of programs geared to build communities and
help young people advance.  We’re very active with City Works and the
Detroit Public Schools. We take community involvement  so seriously
that it’s one of the requirements for employment with JaysFades.com.

Litlle Willie’s Hair Salon

Laughter
and camaraderie permeate the atmosphere in this customer friendly
environment, thanks to it’s affable owner and proprietor.  We spoke
with the Samanth Simmons, the salon’s manager of 14 years about what’s
happening at Little Willie’s.

What have these tough economic times meant to your industry?
We’re seeing a lot of people return to natural hair since the economy
got bad.  They’re trying to cut back on the number of visits and the
cost of maintaining the more elaborate hair styles by wearing their own
hair in a natural and healthy way. We’ve also seen a slight turn over
in the past couple of years in the business, but we usually have 15
stylist, two barbers and a lash technician on duty here.

What are the cutting edge hair trends you see emerging?
Seeing a lot of people prefer to wear natural hair styles You know how
history repeats itself.  We’re seeing a lot of styles return from the
’80’s — the salt and pepper look and asymmetric bobs are really popular
again. Willie has reinvented the big wave, which is the type of wave
hair style Marilyn Monroe wore.  They’re are a lot of younger women
requesting the classic and flapper styles of the 20’s and 30’s for
formal events. But pretty much most women are wearing their own hair
right now.

What are the best hair treatments for summer maintenance and work-out routines?
Keep your hair moisturized, especially if you have any type of chemical
in the hair like a relaxer or color because the sun dries it out so, so
it’s best to use a good moisturizer and avid using heat. For women
working out, a lot of professional women are wearing sew-ins, short
texturized hair or braids.

Community involvement.
We hold a candidates forum every month to bring people out to to hear
the issues and make better decisions on who we put in office.

We’ve seen how much not being aware of what our city leaders are doing
has cost us, so we have to be really careful about how we proceed.
