rollingout.com and Bronner Brothers International Hair Show have formed
an unprecedented partnership to identify beauticians and barbers who
make outstanding contributions to clients and their communities on a
regular basis. Over the next few weeks, we’ll feature several of those
cosmetologists who have answered the call and have chosen to share

Dawn Sanford, Stylist
Big D’s Hair Salon
Dawn Sanford is a 22-year veteran of the beauty and cosmetology industry and is the senior stylists in a shop of 15 operators.
What hair styles are you seeing emerge during the warm weather months?
Young men are wearing Mohawks and Afros and women are wearing braids
again as well as weaves. People, are in general wearing longer hair
and getting it done less often. That’s an effect of the economy.
What advice do you offer for summer hair care and maintenance?
Shampoo and use a good conditioner regularly. For men that means weekly
and for women bi-weekly. Since we don’t like to wear rollers, wrap your
hair at night. If you want curl roll your hair in the morning while
getting dressed.
How do you help build the community and support clients?
Big D’s is a pillar of the community and has been for a long time.
We’re very involved in literacy activities and keep a library of books
here in the shop to read to kids and for them to read while they and
their parents are here getting services. We also educate them about
money and we host neighborhood barbecues and activities. We’re really a
family here.

professionalism is far beyond his years. Bernard of Final Kut Hair
Salon on Detroit’s westside has been a practicing barber for two
years.
What advice do you have for men for summer hair care and maintenance?
During the summer months men’s hair grows a little faster, so it’s best
to get a cut that they can maintain a little easier. Always use
conditioner, and don’t use a lot of grease in your hair.
How has the economy affected your business?
Barbering is virtually recession proof. I haven’t noticed my business dropping off much.
How are you involved in supporting your community?
We’re having city council primaries with 160 candidates running in a
run-off election on August 4. So we try to have candidates come out
and talk to the community about their platforms and their agendas. We
did a big voter registration drive and one of the main reasons for
doing that is that a lot of people here in Michigan don’t know that as
long as you’re 18 on or before election day, you can vote in the
primary. … One day I was just [sitting] at home and I realized that
pople weren’t even registered to vote. So I asked myself what are you
doing to help out, and I decided to do something about it.
