NFL at Mid-Season, New Orleans Big Easy Surprise

alt

With eight games on the books and eight games left, there
are still two undefeated teams left in the NFL. The Indianapolis Colts and the New
Orleans Saints remain unbeaten and could feasibly meet in the Super Bowl.

That’s nothing new for Peyton Manning and the Colts, but for
the Saints it’s the first time in their 43-year history that the team has gotten this far. “[From] 1967
until now, we’re the only (Saints) team to have done that,” says quarterback Drew
Brees. “That’s really special. I feel like we’ve got a special group of
guys, a special team, and certainly we’re not satisfied with just being 8-0. We
have what it takes to just continue to win.”

Only one team has ever gone undefeated all season long — the 1972 Miami
Dolphins — so the task for New
Orleans will intensify as the season progresses. With
teams like the 7-1 Minnesota Vikings and the 6-2 New England Patriots competing
there is still some exciting football yet to be played.

Defending the Super Bowl title are the Pittsburgh
Steelers who are 6-2 thus far this season and just hitting their stride at the midway point. “We have
to continue to be a team on the rise,” said Head Coach Mike Tomlin. “I know
there are teams that we are competing against that are doing that. That’s what
November is about. We are pushing to the latter part of the season — it’s about
getting better.”
