Venus Williams battled it out with Israel’s Shahar Pe’er on Arthur Ashe Court on Sunday in New York. She went into the match with a 5-0 record against Pe’er and now she’s added one more to the win column.
Pe’er gave the 12-time U.S. Open challenger an unusually tough time in the first set, but Venus pulled it out in a solidly won tie-break. The second set was more of a breeze, sans a hiccup when Venus tried to close the out at 5-2 – in an unruly dress that needed constant adjustment. A wobbly serve (52% first serve percentage and considerably slower second serve) allowed Pe’er to break her at that closing moment, for a total of three breaks during the whole match. But it was the power, experience and net prowess that Venus possesses that proved too much for the Israeli to handle.
