Last week, rolling out magazine published a story on Vybz Kartel and his choice to bleach his skin. In the article, Kartel’s lack of self-identity and self-worth were questioned.
The story touched a nerve with thousands of readers who were appalled by Kartel’s decision to lighten his complexion.
Kartel recently spoke out for the first time since the story was published.
“I’m my own man, and as such I do my own thing,” Kartel said. “When black women stop straightening their hair and wearing wigs and weaves, when white women stop getting lip and butt injections and implants, when bald men stop getting hair transplants, and when people stop getting nose jobs and cosmetic surgery, then I’ll stop using the ‘cakesoap’ and we’ll all live naturally ever after. Until then f— you all.”
It’s apparent that Kartel is comfortable with his makeover, but it’s sad that he’s unaware of his own self-degradation. –amir shaw
