On the Rise – Star of the Week:
Bruce Johnson
What he does:
Actor, singer, voice-overs, voice-diction coach and speaker.
Where he’s been seen:
The Family That Preys, A Heart That Forgives, ComicView All Stars, Church Girl, The Dreamer, What About the Children, and Sing Sisters In The Name Of Gospel
What the stage represents for him:
“It’s a place where you live your dream and have others join you in that dream.”
What he’s learned from years of performing:
“Voice control, speaking with volume and commanding the stage in every performance.”
On making the transition to film from the stage:
“Shooting a film is very different from stage performances. You have many retakes with film, and stage is live. The [stage] experience was a joy ride that I look forward to taking again in the near future.”
His favorite black directors:
“Mr. Tyler Perry is on the top of my list right now. He is an awesome director.”
His favorite black actors:
“Denzel Washington, Ving Rhames and Alfre Woodard, just to name a few.”
His response to the lack of African Americans at the Academy Awards this year:
“I really was disappointed. However, we have to step up to the plate and make our presence seen at any and all awards shows, even if we’re not receiving an award.”
Next on his agenda:
“After returning to Houston from the San Diego Black Film Festival, I have a new script for a film that I’m considering. I’m performing in a live musical tribute celebrating Bishop Walter Hawkins during the Edwin Hawkins & Walter Hawkins Music & Arts Love Fellowship Conference [the prerformance will be available on DVD]. I am also in talks with HTV Houston Television about a talk show. I’m looking to do a documentary this year.”
