Mashonda Tifrere suffered a very public and nasty divorce with super producer Swizz Beatz in 2008, amid numerous rumors that he had a long-standing affair with his current wife, singer Alicia Keys. Now that the dust has settled, Tifrere is speaking out about the divorce, the joy of being a single mother and her upcoming reality show.
“Divorce is terrible for anyone, but when it’s public, it’s over the top,” explains Tifrere, in an interview with popeater.com.
The now-single mother also explains that despite her once messy past with Keys, the two are now “totally cool” with each other, if only for the sake of her 3-year-old son, Kaseem.
“There is a child involved that everybody loves dearly, so we make it work for him,” said Tifrere. “People need to come to terms for the child, and we’re finally in a really good place now.”
Tifrere happily reveals that her son is the new love of her life.
“He brings so much joy to my life … I looked at him this morning, and it’s still unbelievable that he came from me and that he’s going to be a man one day,” she gushed. “One of the most precious parts of motherhood is watching him grow. I can still remember being pregnant, so when I look at him now, it’s unreal.”
Now that her family life is settled, Tifrere is returning to the spotlight in VH1’s new reality show “Love & Hip-Hop,” which follows five women in the world of hip-hop as they try to find personal and professional success and, as Tifrere explains, is better than the “Real Housewives” franchise.
“We’re hotter and juicier. We’re all living out our dreams in New York and sharing our passion for music and standing up for ourselves as independent women,” explains Tifrere. “I’m a single mom, and I’m making it all happen. I have a lot of stories to tell and want to share it.”
