Los Angeles hip-hop group Odd Future have amassed a growing cult following and the attention of several major labels ever since they began posting free music on their tumblr website early last year. Now, the rap group is reportedly on the brink of signing a distribution deal with Sony’s RED imprint that will allow them to form their own record label.
According to rapradar.com, the front man of the 11-member rap collective, Tyler The Creator, hinted at the impending distribution deal on April 25 via his Twitter page, “Odd Future…..Records? Maybe,”
On April 26, Odd Future’s manager, Chris Clancy, released a statement to rapradar.com, explaining that the beneficial deal would allow the rap group to retain control of their music, a rarity for most new artists.
“It’s based on getting the distribution deal we’ve always envisioned that allows the group to “sign themselves” to their own company and keep their masters,” said Clancy. “They will have 100 percent creative control of all aspects of their music, art, and release schedule with no 3rd party participation in outside business. Freedom and ownership was the whole point. Red and Sony know that it’s in everyone’s best interest to maintain the group’s authenticity and control. They built it, they deserve it. There’s no cheesy hooks or fluorescent liquor product placements in the works … It’s about to be fun … and different …”
