The neglect and assault on black citizens in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina should have been considered a crime against humanity. The government’s slow response and the violence perpetrated by local law enforcement officers led to deaths that should not have occurred.
On March 31, two white police officers were sentenced to prison for their role in killing and burning a black man during Hurricane Katrina.
According to reports, Officer David Warren shot Henry Glover as he walked with a friend and family member near a vacant strip mall. Close to death, Glover was taken to a makeshift police station. But instead of giving Glover assistance, the police officers handcuffed the individuals who drove him to the station and confiscated their car. With Glover’s body still in the back seat, Officer Greg McRae took the car and burned it in an attempt to destroy the evidence of the murder.
Unfortunately, Warren and McRae were not given sentences that offered justice for their horrendous acts of violence. Judge Lance M. Africk sentenced Warren to 25 years and McRae received a 17-year sentence. –amir shaw
