While much of the nation is in an uproar over Casey Anthony’s verdict, the injustice continues to occur in America. Tyell Morton could spend nearly a decade in prison for a high school prank.
During the last day of school of his senior year at Rushville Consolidated High School in Rush County in Indianapolis, Morton decided to place a blow-up, sex doll in a bathroom stall. But after a janitor witnessed Morton running away from the restroom, school officials were contacted, and the police were called.
The police brought K9 dogs, and a bomb squad searched the entire school before realizing that Morton only had a sex doll.
Possibly embarrassed by the manpower that was used, police arrested Morton. After serving five days in jail, Morton was released on a $30,000 bond that his parents raised with help from those in his community. The prosecutor charged him with disorderly conduct and institutional criminal mischief. The later is a felony charge that could lead to up to eight years in prison.
Those who were angered by the Casey Anthony verdict should use similar efforts to speak out against Morton’s case.
A recent high school graduate should not be forced to spend a moment in jail for a harmless prank that was overblown by school officials, the police department and a dim-witted prosecutor. –amir shaw
