Rachel Stewart is a fabulous jewelry designer and artist from North Carolina. She creates artsy pieces for the bold woman who loves showing off her individual style. Rolling out was excited that Stewart sat aside a few minutes to chat with us about her inspiration for her jewelry collection, branding her work of art and her unique style.

Your jewelry line is very Afrocentric. Is your line targeted just for African Americans? It may appear that way, but, when I create something, I do it for me. I create what I like. I never have a target audience in mind.

What made you want to create jewelry?

I’ve been an artist all my life. I’ve painted, made clothing and jewelry off and on for many years. I came to a crossroads about three years ago when I was laid off from my job and made a decision to work for myself, to take control of my life and my security.

Branding yourself is key in today’s world. With so much competition, what have you done to make sure you have a presence?

I use every outlet there is available — social media, advertising on blogs … You have to remain consistent. Most of my time is spent online, marketing and keeping fresh images of me and my product everywhere I can. You can’t wait for everyone else to come to you. You have to be the one to spread the word. There is a lot of competition but you can’t think about that. You have to think about presenting yourself and your product the best you can, as much as you can.

Can you tell us what inspires you when you create your pieces? What inspires me the most are the iconic ladies of music — Phyllis Hyman, Patrice Rushen, Dolly Parton, Patti LaBelle — the bold jewelry and fashions they wore are what I grew up with, and I am still inspired by them.

You recently got rid of your humongous Afro. What made you cut your hair? I’ve been natural for over 20 years, so shaving my head was nothing new for me. I shave my head every few years or just whenever I get bored. It’s my favorite look, and it’s so easy.
