Maya Moore ended her career at the University of Connecticut as one of the greatest collegiate basketball players of all time. Moore became the No. 1 overall pick of the Minnesota Linx and currently averages 14 points per game. She recently was voted as the first rookie starter in the WNBA’s All-Star game since 2002. Moore spoke with rolling out sports about her rise in the WNBA and being the first female athlete to sign with Brand Jordan. –amir shaw
How were you introduced to the game of basketball?
When I was 5 years-old, my mom propped up a hoop in the back of our apartment door to keep me busy. I would run and try to dunk the ball. As a got older, I continued to play the game.
When did you realize that you could play this game at a higher level?
I would always surround myself with great talent. It helped me to get better. I realized I could play this game around 12. I started growing at 13 and 14. And now I’m 6 feet. As a sophomore in high school, I dunked for the first time. It was a moment of adrenaline.
What does it mean to be the first female to sign to Brand Jordan?
Being the first female basketball player on Brand Jordan is awesome. It’s cool to have that work ethic and competitiveness that represent Michael Jordan.
What are the differences between the collegiate game and playing in the WNBA?
The comfort zone and scheduling of college is different. There are different details and a transition period. On the court defensively, I have to guard the best guards in the world. So, that’s been the most difficult adjustment.
