First 'The Mo'nique Show,' Now the George Lopez Show Gets Canceled ... Why Are Minority-Led Talk Shows Short-Lived?

Just days after it was announced that the Mo’Nique Show was being cancelled, it has now surfaced that Lopez Tonight has also gotten the ax. The late night show, helmed by comedian George Lopez, had only been on air for two seasons. This news comes after Lopez had suffered plummeted ratings, which occurred when he moved his slot to midnight in order to accomodate fellow comedian Conan O’Brien’s show. TBS has since decided to pull the plug rather than invest in a third season. According to E! Online:

A spokesman for the cable net announced that tomorrow night’s episode will be Lopez’s last. Seems like someone couldn’t get off the air fast enough.

“TBS has reached the difficult decision not to order a third season of Lopez Tonight,” the network said. “We are proud to have partnered with George Lopez, who is an immensely talented comedian and entertainer.

“TBS has valued its partnership with George and appreciates all of his hard work on behalf of the network, both on and off the air.”

Lopez himself has yet to issue a statement on the cancellation, either formally or via his otherwise quite active Twitter account.

Although Lopez hasn’t made an official statement, he joked with his audience that his  show was canceled because of his brown skin. Others speculate that the Conan O’Brien slot shift sabotaged his endeavors. With these cancellations happening so close to one another, it leads one to think perhaps there’s a concerted effort against minority-led late night shows. What are your thoughts?
