Phyllis Hyman was dashing, dynamic and devastatingly beautiful: The singer and actress is best known for her 1991 album Prime of My Life, which scored a R&B and pop hit, “Don’t Wanna Change the World,” as well as two more strong R&B singles, “Living in Confusion” and “When You Get Right Down to It.” She also made appearances in School Daze and The Kill Reflex. in June 1995, she committed suicide by overdosing on pentoberbital and secobarbital in her New York City apartment. She was found hours before she was scheduled to perform at the famed Apollo Theater and a week before her 46th birthday.
