5 Conscious Rappers Who Combat Negative Images

?uestove: Besides looking like he was pulled from the black-and-white photos of the Black Power Movement, replete with ever-present hair pick and unrestrained Afro, Questlove, the man born Ahmir Khalib Thompson, is not a rapper, per say, but he has heavy doses of hip hop culture flowing through his veins. In addition to making millions of rap fans proud as part of the in-house band for “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” with the Grammy-winning group the Roots, Questlove has produced and/or collaborated with the likes of Jay-Z, Amy Winehouse, Common, D’Angelo, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Bilal, John Legend — and his game is so tight that he even goes hard in the studio with the likes of 70’s crooner Al Green. His list of accomplishments and activities are much too numerous to name, but the Roots’ annual sessions on the eve of the Grammys in West Hollywood, Calif., is one of the three or four best concerts I’ve ever witnessed [behind Michael Jackson, sister Janet and Prince]. I was spellbound that he could switch up from deejay to drums and other instruments with the ease of a man tying his shoes or changing the remote.
