D’Angelo – “Brown Sugar”
At first listen, anyone could mistake this dense and dark but bucket-jazz tune for an ode to D’Angelo’s favorite caramel-skinned woman, sweetly called Brown Sugar. But with deeper inspection, listeners can hear lines like, “that’s why my eyes are a shade of blood burgundy,” and “I get high off your love, don’t know how to behave,” proving that it’s not a woman that D’Angelo is crooning for, but really his beloved Mary Jane.
