Rick James – “Mary Jane”
While D’Angelo crooned softly about his love for “Brown Sugar,” his funkier musical predecessor Rick James screamed his love for the drug aka “Mary Jane.” Spinning his affinity for marijuana with his punk-funk musical stylings, James crafted a swirling ode to weed that set fire to the charts as well as many joints and became one of the most heavily sampled funk songs to date.
