Gil Scott-Heron
R.I.P. 5/27/11
An American soul and jazz poet, musician, and author known primarily for his work as a spoken word performer in the 1970s and ’80s, Gil Scott Heron’s collaboration with musician Brian Jackson gave the world an enduring musical fusion of jazz, blues, and soul. Scott-Heron was a master of performance delivering lyrical content that spoke to the social and political issues of the time. He was a self-described “bluesologist,” which he defined as “a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues.”
