The civil rights activist and political figure was born to a 16-year-old single mother, Helen Burns Straggs, who had Jesse with a married man, former professional boxer Noah Louis Robinson. Helen married a man named Charles Henry Jackson when Jesse was 2 and 14 years later, Charles adopted Jesse, who took on his stepfather’s surname.
