Despite being the best tap-dancer of his generation and the highest-paid black entertainer, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson (Hines) was severely compartmentalized and minimized coming up out of the Civil War era and stuck in the confining Jim Crow America. Bojangles, despite his awesome talents, died a broken-heart recluse and penniless.
