Gone With the Wind (1939) Margaret Mitchell’s celebrated 1936 tome-turned-film is said to be the most profitable movie of all time. It was directed by The Wizard of Oz’s Victor Fleming and starred, of course, Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. This Civil War epic also broke records of that era for being the longest film (three hours, 44 minutes) and longest movie to make (two years) that nearly created a casualty out of the director who briefly exited during filming, due to exhaustion.
